Miami Young Republicans

It's Memorial Day, and we urge everyone to reflect on those who pay the ultimate price to protect our freedom.

If you're interested in how a small gesture can show our men and women in uniform your appreciation, please consider checking out Operation USO Care Package at http://www.uso.org/operation-uso-care-package.aspx.

For just $25 an active duty soldier, sailor or airman will receive a care package from the USO worth $75, including phonecards so they can connect with their families, playing cards, basic toiletries such as shampoo, sun block and hand sanitizer and more.

The USO has a tradition of more than 70 years of showing support to our armed services. Check it out, and stay tuned for more opportunities to support our troops!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the May meeting of the Miami Young Republicans. We heard from candidates for local and state office as well as the new leadership of the local Republican party.

We'll soon be sharing the volunteer form for the Miami-Dade Republican Party. Be on the lookout for this opportunity to get involved!

Our friends at South Florida Conservative, the local tea party organization, is having a great event on Tuesday, June 12 at 7:00 pm at Brasa Nova Grill, which is located at 9610 SW 8th Street in Miami.

Their special guest will be U.S. Congressman David Rivera, who will be part of a town hall to discuss the latest developments from DC and take your questions. The event is free and open to the public!

The annual meeting of the Florida Federation of the Young Republicans is June 8-10 in West Palm Beach at the historic Colony Hotel. These conventions are a great opportunity to hear from top speakers, meet candidates, and network with other YRs from around the state. It's also time for statewide elections, which means we'll need members of our group to join us as delegates.

May News 5/18/112

Our next meeting of the Miami Young Republicans is Tuesday, May 22 at The Globe, which is located at 377 Alhambra Circle in Coral Gables. We begin with a happy hour and drink specials around 6:30 pm and the business of the meeting at 7:30 pm.

Our guests will include:

  • Ben Powell, the new chair of the Miami-Dade Republican Executive Committee
  • State Representative Ana Rivas Logan (Dist. 114)
  • Amory Bodin, candidate for state house

and a late addition, House Majority Leader and Miami-Dade Delegation Chair Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera!

Remember, our monthly meetings are always free, and always open to Republicans of all ages... so come on out, and bring a friend!

Time is running out to register to be one of our delegates to the FFYR Annual Convention, which is in West Palm Beach June 8-10. We're getting a great deal at the historic Colony Hotel, and YR clubs from around the state will be coming together to discuss opportunities to get involved and of course look at the upcoming election.

Recent FFYR event speakers have included Marco Rubio, Adam Hasner, Col. Allen West, Mike Haridopolos, Rick Scott, Jennifer Carroll, Pam Bondi, Jeff Atwater and more. Because this is the annual we'll also be voting on the statewide board, so it's important for us to get as many people to take the ride up as possible!

Details are at www.ffyr.org. If you're interested in carpooling or splitting a hotel room, email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for details.

Missed a meeting? Want to know what the club is about? Or just want to review some past highlights?

Go to our YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/miamiyrs, for clips of some of our past speakers, including a special message from former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich congratulating us on 30 years.

Hope to see you all at an event soon. Remember to watch our Facebook and Twitter channels for the latest on upcoming events!

April News 4/28/12

Thanks to everyone who came out to our April general meeting. For those who missed it, you missed an opportunity to hear from Republican Jewish Coalition Florida Executive Director Marc Adler, Inner City Urban Republican Club president James Brady, State Representative Jose Felix Diaz, State Senator and Majority Whip Anitere Flores, several local campaigns, and more.

For those who did join us, we're interested in your opinion. What did you think of Angelique Euro Cafe as a meeting location? How does it compare to The Globe, where we've been meeting in the past?

The annual National Day of Prayer takes place Thursday, May 3. Locally, the event is being marked in Coral Gables from noon to 1 pm at Merrick Park at 400 Biltmore Way. (the actual park, not the mall), located directly across from Coral Gables City Hall.

The event will feature brief remarks by State Rep. Erik Fresen, local clergy, civic leaders and more. The National Day of Prayer recognition is free and open to the public. Come check out this community event!

The Carlos Gimenez for Mayor campaign is getting ready to launch its summer internship program. If you're interested in receiving information about working with this campaign, message us and we'll pass along the details of the program.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 22 at 7:30 pm. Mark your calendars!
